UH places first in isle run

Seven members from the University
of Hawaii track team ran 140 miles in the annual "Around
the Island Race" held last week-end. The UH Chargers finished
first in front of 75 teams.
The team comprised of distance coach Johnny
Faerber and tracksters Phil Banko, Peter Carole, Steve Ferber,
Mike Garcia, Dan Wilder and Rick Villegas, finished in a record
time of 12 hours, 11 minutes, and 32 seconds.The new record surpassed
by 21 minutes the old mark set in 1973. The Chargers finished
the 140 mile race 36 minutes ahead of the nearest competitor,
the Tantalus Gold team.
JoAnne Wilder from the women's track squad
came in second in the co-ed division behind the Chun family team.
Special mention from the Chargers went to
Dick Asato who protected the Chargers by bicycling arount the
island with the runners.
